My Glens Falls: Justine Mosher

We caught up with Justine Mosher this week! They share their passion for all things outdoors, including becoming the 27th person to finish the Adirondack 46r Grid (that’s hiking a round of the 46 peaks every month of the year!), a bit of Glens Falls nostalgia (Red Wings and Ice Hawks games, anyone?), and more…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Justine Mosher and I work in the Compliance Department at Hudson Headwaters Health Network.

I'm an avid runner, skier, hiker, cyclist and all around outdoor enthusiast. I started running my senior year of high school and quickly became addicted. I graduated from Glens Falls High School in 2003 and later from Siena College.

In my twenties, I raced just about every weekend of the spring, summer and fall, from 5Ks to marathons. These days, I've hung up the racing shoes in favor of a more mellow pace.

Year round, I spend many weekends in the Adirondack High Peaks or neighboring areas, hiking, skiing or biking. This past December, I became the 27th person to finish the Adirondack 46r "Grid", which equates to hiking a round of the 46 every month of the year, for a total of 552 peaks.

In the warmer months, I like to get out on my road bike, typically in the Brant Lake area on the weekend. Riding from The Hub is always a good bet, with various routes to choose from.  A favorite of mine is a 50 mile loop around Schroon Lake with rolling hills.

I don't swim, but I do enjoy getting out on the water in my canoe, especially on the smaller, more desolate ponds in the area. With all of my time in the mountains, I dabble in photography, but very much as a hobby, not a profession.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I was born in Glens Falls and grew up on the East Side of the city, attending Jackson Heights and then Glens Falls Middle School and High School. I now own a home in a quiet neighborhood in Queensbury.

Many of my friends left for college and didn't come back to the area, but I've never had a real desire to leave. Every time I travel and find myself boarding a plane to come home, I feel content with my destination. I can do just about everything that I enjoy within an hour's drive of my house, and if not, the Albany airport is less than an hour away.

On Revitalization

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the revitalization over the past 20 years or so.  When I was a kid, the only thing we really went downtown for was hockey games. Now, all of the restaurants and small businesses lining the streets have completely transformed the area.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

An ideal day around the city for me would start with a run from the YMCA or a bike ride on the Warren County Bike Trail to Lake George (and perhaps beyond). From there, lunch at Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe would be in order and I'd cap it off with a visit to Fountain Square Outfitters for some new gear.

On the Past

Some of my best memories growing up in Glens Falls revolve around playing in Little League at East Field and riding bikes with friends all around Glens Falls during the summer. Going to Red Wings and Icehawks games with my mother are top tier nostalgia. Adirondack Lumberjacks games with fireworks afterwards were memorable as well.

On the Future

My friends and co-workers will probably roll their eyes at this one (as they know I'm a fan) — it's not realistic, but a Trader Joe's in Glens Falls would be amazing!

P.S. Check out more of our My Glens Falls series here.

My Glens Falls: James Rosenfield

This week we caught up with James Rosenfield, who you may recognize as owner of Epiphany North Hair Design! He shares a bit about his circa 1852 home, his pick for best pizza in Glens Falls, an area of the city he’d like to see new energy put into, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is James Rosenfield, and I own Epiphany North Hair Design as well as LHB Soul Center located on Maple Street in the ever evolving downtown Glens Falls area. I am the oldest of five children and have nine nieces and nephews! Our family has always been close. With that in mind, I created a business that is a second home for myself and for our patrons, who we treat as family!

On Life In Glens Falls

I think of Glens Falls as a peaceful place that is evolving into a very positive environment for those seeking a refuge for themselves and their families. I grew up in the Saratoga area and actually went to South Glens Falls High School in 10th grade. I wasn’t brought back to Glens Falls until I decided to open a specialty salon in the downtown area with a colleague who also lives in the area.

My spouse and I bought our house here at the end of 2022 because we knew it was where we wanted to start our family. We now have been blessed with our son, Ezra, who truly makes Glens Falls that much more special to us.

On Old City Homes

The house we bought was renovated during the pandemic. It was built in 1852! It’s a charming farmhouse that actually has a ton of history from the time Glens Falls was built. Our home is said to have been the oldest on our street! We even have the original owner documents. We continue to strive to make this home our home by giving it a face lift where necessary. Our neighborhood is also shifting as other homes are being renovated and fixed up. Other new families continue to purchase homes around us and we just love seeing that as well.

Some Glens Falls Favorite

I think my favorite thing about Glens Falls is that it’s a diamond in the rough, so to speak. Some people wouldn’t expect the amount of wonderful small businesses and amazing restaurants that we have to enjoy! For example, I think people should definitely check out the Shirt Factory in the Arts District as well as the amazing vegan Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe. They have the best pizza, even for non vegans.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I would definitely start my day off right with a beautiful walk or run to Crandall Park.  Afterwards I would enjoy a refreshing smoothie at Juicin’ Jar to take with me while doing some window shopping on Glen Street. Lunch would be at Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe while I get some me time and perhaps some behind the scenes creative business work done on my iPad.

My favorite downtown activity always includes touring the restaurants and / or Mean Max Brewery, especially if it’s a date night. If not, our go to family restaurant is Raul’s, and then this time of year we will finish it off with an ice cream and a stroll at Coopers Cave! There’s a nice path that takes you through their establishment and beyond.

On the Past

Honestly, my favorite memory is when I lived in a loft above Spot Coffee before tying the knot with my now spouse! I lived alone for a little bit and truly enjoyed making connections at Raul’s as I built my business when I first opened it back in August of 2016. I made local friends that I am currently friends with to this day!

On the Future

I would love to see South / Broad Street become more evolved and new businesses open up there. Seeing more renovation on that side of town would be a great service to our area. There’s so much empty space there that I think could use new energy!

My Glens Falls: Drew Cappabianca

We caught up with Drew Cappabianca this week! A lifelong Glens Falls resident, he shares what it’s been like to come of age as the city rebuilt, some thoughts on preserving the architecture of the city, his favorite bike ride route, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Drew Cappabianca, and my wife Sarah and I have three boys: Eben, Alyis, and Isaac. I’m the owner of The Hub in Brant Lake, as well as President of the North Warren Chamber of Commerce and President of the Upper Hudson Trails Alliance.

On Life In Glens Falls

I was born and raised right here, but I did move to Seattle for about a year in my very early 20s. I moved back to be with my now wife, but being away also made me truly appreciate how amazing this area is.

What keeps me here? It's a fantastic place to live. I have great friends and family, Glens Falls has a thriving cultural scene, and there's just about any recreational opportunity you can think of right here in Warren County.

On Old City Homes

We live in a home that was built by one of my ancestors. One of my many-great grandfathers built two houses, one for each of his two daughters, back in the late 1800s. It's not a fixer upper necessarily, but by the nature of being over a hundred years old it always needs something, whether it's a repair or just updating. For example, we just replaced the original 1800s kitchen. The counters were shallow and the cabinets were so close to the counter there wasn't any space for countertop appliances which made modern living awkward (apparently counter top appliances weren't a design consideration before electricity!). If we needed under-counter flour barrel storage though, it would have been perfect!

There's so much to love about our neighborhood! The K-12 schools are easily walkable, as are Crandall Park and downtown. Leaving town via Exit 18 or 19 is a breeze. The houses are beautiful and there's so much history.

A Glens Falls Favorite

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is that it's still real. There's no facade, the people are still real, and while some parts are polished, the edges are still rough.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day would start with walking our youngest, Isaac, to school, grabbing an espresso and a Spicy Vegetarian breakfast sandwich at Kru Coffee, and heading out on a road bike ride for a few hours. I would take either the Warren County Bikeway to Lake George and head north into the Adirondacks, or take the Feeder Canal Towpath and head out to Washington County, possibly on the Empire State Trail.

The day would end with watching Isaac's game and a family dinner at Downtown City Tavern, or if it's a date night, dinner at any of the awesome restaurants downtown and a show at The Wood or The Park Theatre!

On the Past

My favorite Glens Falls memory is growing up here — everything about it. It's such a great place to grow up and live. You can't beat the walkable / bikeable neighborhoods, the fantastic open spaces, the arts scene, and the fact that you don't have to leave the county to do just about any recreational opportunity you can think of.

I also really appreciate the time frame in which I got to grow up here. When I was a kid, downtown was dead. Now it's a postcard picture. To come of age in a time when the city was rebuilding itself is really special. To watch and be a part of all the effort that went into making Glens Falls what it is today is truly remarkable.

On the Future

I’d love to see some kind of program to save the architecture of the all the old houses, many of which are rental units. It pains me to see beautiful ornate porches crumbling into the ground, only to be replaced by square pressure treated lumber, or even worse, just a stoop. I completely understand that it is very expensive to replace them as they were, but I think it's even more costly on the cultural heritage of the city to lose them. I would love to see some kind of publicly funded program to help landowners preserve the character of their properties.

My Glens Falls: Lauren Cygan

This week we caught up with Lauren Cygan, who you may recognize as the Executive Director of the Glens Falls Y! She shares what drew her family to move to the area just over a year ago, the joys of fixing up a 1930’s cottage, her version of a perfect Glens Falls day, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Lauren Cygan. I am the Executive Director of the Family YMCA of the Glens Falls Area and lucky enough to call myself wife and mother in an energetic family including my husband, three teenaged children, two dogs, and two cats.

It is an honor and a privilege to be able to work for the Family YMCA of the Glens Falls Area. I am thankful that my past experiences as an educator, fitness professional, small business owner, and director opened this incredible opportunity to serve the outstanding community of Glens Falls. Like the community it serves, the Glens Falls Y is the embodiment of the town, its people, and its values. Each day I am humbled and grateful as I go into this incredible nonprofit, nestled between Cole's Woods and Crandall Park, serving people through youth programming, health and wellness initiatives, community engagement, and social responsibility.

The Glens Falls Y, like the town, has a longstanding and rich history. I love grabbing a latte at Spot which is now housed in what was the original location, and imagining what it was once like when the original Y first opened its doors there in 1892.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

My family and I chose to move to Glens Falls a little over a year ago. It is said that every cloud has a silver lining. While no one can dispute the challenges of the COVID pandemic, Glens Falls is our silver lining. The pandemic created changes in work, shed a bright spotlight on family, and even highlighted different ways to stay connected with friends and loved ones regardless of distance. These shifts created an opportunity for us to look at life differently. For instance, remote work meant that we no longer needed to live within a certain radius of our jobs and could choose to live in an area that better met our collective needs, interests, and lifestyle. While my husband and I had always said we wanted to move to a walkable downtown when the kids were out of school, as the pandemic started winding down and the opportunity to move presented itself, the kids absolutely astounded us when they asked us why we were waiting. Turns out, they were up for the adventure too!

We chose Glens Falls for a multitude of reasons. Not only were we looking for an established town with older homes on treelined streets, downtown shopping, dining, and entertainment, and schools, parks, and recreational opportunities, but Glens Falls also brought us right to the foothills of the Adirondacks and Lake George. My children and I have been coming to the lake and the surrounding mountains our entire lives (and my husband his entire life with me). My parents were first introduced to the area by friends in 1970 when they vacationed at Silver Bay YMCA Conference and Retreat Center. From that day on, the lake, the mountains, and the people in this area have been an integral part in the fabric of all of our lives and a perennial fixture for fun vacations from a quick overnight to a season-long stay. We love hiking, swimming, biking, and boating in the warmer months and snowshoeing, skiing, and skating (preferably on natural ice) in the winter.

On Renovating an Old Glens Falls Home

It did not take us more than one visit to town with our realtor to find our forever home in the form of a 1932 fixer upper, or as the real estate description so eloquently described it, a house "on the brink of being a stunner". Many close community connections have been forged through working with the absolutely astounding craftsmen our house has introduced us to. From slate roofers to cedar shake siding specialists, vintage metal cabinet refinishers, to electricians, plumbers, painters, contractors and more, bringing our beautiful cottage back from "the brink" has not only been a year-long labor of love, but the gateway to beautiful friendships and a network of incredible people whose passion, creativity, care, and competency shows in all they do.

On Warm Welcomes

While the house is indeed a labor of love, the community took no work at all to be completely enamored with and to instantly feel a part of. I am absolutely overwhelmed and eternally grateful for the people who make "Hometown USA" just that, our home. We did not feel like newcomers for long. From the moment we arrived, our neighbors jumped right in with warm welcomes, friendly conversations, and lots of town information from leaf collection schedules and back to school information, to the best places to eat and stories of themselves and the history of this incredible town. Even as teenagers, the kids had the same experiences, meeting new people through school, sports, and clubs, and rapidly forging friendships that feel like lifetimes in the making. This is a town and a community where no one is a stranger and everyone is welcomed right into the fold. We chose Glens Falls for the incredible place it is, it will forever be home because of the people who make it so.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Trying to identify a hidden gem in a sea of treasure is a daunting ask. If I had to say, the gem is the community and its thoughtful accessibility to everything including art and culture, theater and entertainment, exceptional dining, outdoor recreation opportunities, and easy access to natural wilderness. We love that many of our fast-favorites are only a walk or a bike-ride away. We value that we can just as easily be immersed in Cole's Woods, Crandall Park, or Haviland's Cove as we can check out the most recent installation at the Hyde, listen to live music at bars, restaurants, and theaters, or take in some local history at the Chapman Historical Museum. Where else can you ride your bike to and from Lake George Village on the same day as you enjoy a thoughtful farm-to-table meal and view exquisite works of art including Homer, Rembrandt, Degas, Renoir, and Picasso?

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls Day depends heavily on the season and who I’m lucky enough to share the day with. There is so much to do and see, a day, a week, even a year, are never enough to do it all. So, given that it’s summer, I am harnessing the longest day of the year so I can try to fit in as much as possible.

I would awaken early and go for a walk or a run through Cole's Woods with my husband, daughter, and (always) the dogs. After, we would walk over to the Farmer's Market to get some of our favorite staples for the week and either grab a smoothie from Jenny Jo's or pick up a latte from Kru or Spot before walking back home to get our bikes.

A late morning ride with the whole family along the feeder canal or the Warren County Bikeway would not only give us the opportunity to take a quick swim in the lake or the river but would also bring us back for a little shopping at the Shirt Factory and lunch and some bakery takeout items at Rockhill Bakehouse. With a family that includes a vegan, two vegetarians, and two omnivores, the dining options in Glens Falls are plentiful for all, but Rockhill Bakehouse's vegan menu is an easy win.

On our way home, we might stop at The Hyde, The Chapman, or do some shopping on Glen with fun stops at Fountain Square Outfitters, Minky Mink, and Rude Betty, or we could swing by the Y for a racquetball round robin, open court basketball, cardio and strength on the wellness floor, or an amazing group fitness class.

Then, it would be time to head back home to get ready to head out for a night on the town. Dinner is nearly impossible to choose since there is just so much to love. A nice dinner out might be shared at Morgan and Company, Mint, or Park & Elm, all of which share exceptional menus and beautiful outdoor dining options.

If we are in the mood for drinks, food, and fun, we always love the friendly atmosphere of Bullpen (where we shared our very first dinner in town as a family), chips and margaritas at Raul's, or sitting outside just over the bridge at Common Roots enjoying a craft made local beer.

There's great beauty to staying in and enjoying takeout too. A night around the fire pit might include Thai Siam Sushi, Downtown City Tavern, or any number of possible pizza options from Harvest to Angelina's and our "most like we remember" pick I Love New York Pizza.

On the Past — Memories

While our past may not go back too far, we already have collected millions of beautiful memories of this town and the people who give it meaning. Within a year we met the most amazing people and gathered a rich tapestry of beautiful moments in and around this incredible town.

From being able to hike our favorite Adirondacks (even after a full day of work and school), to squeezing in a refreshing morning dip after watching the sunrise over Lake George before starting our day, the accessibility to the natural world creates opportunities for breathtaking memories too regularly not to feel completely indulgent.

We treasure the milestones and memories intricately woven into this past year, from walking to Fourth of July Fireworks in Crandall Park or the Memorial Day Parade up Glen, to Ladies’ Night Out Downtown and the Christkindlmarkt in City Park creating festive fun with friends, every holiday offered an opportunity to engage with community. The high school sports' seasons are town events not to be missed. With kids in the schools and on the teams, we loved our time in the stands, especially when the varsity boys’ basketball team made it to the Section 2 Basketball Finals right here at Cool Insuring Arena!

On the Future — Dreams

Downtown has such a beautiful balance. Art and entertainment, dining and retail, creative cooperatives, and a vision for future development that honors and pays homage to the past. I would love to see that continue with deliberate small businesses filling the beautiful historic storefronts. I think an independent bookstore would be an asset to downtown. I would enjoy seeing the diversity of dining and shopping experiences continue to expand and flourish. Some ideas to add might be gift shops, a counter-service confectionary, and specialty shops, markets, and grocers, in short, anything that continues the beautiful progress downtown has already so thoughtfully created. I love that the town is so community-centric and invests in art, people, and social and environmental initiatives. I would relish opportunities to continue that forward growth as we as a community work together to honor the past as we proactively strive for a bright future.

My Glens Falls: Tyler Whitney

This week we caught up with Tyler Whitney, who you may recognize as the Executive Director of SAIL! He shares what continues to draw him to Glens Falls though he lives in a surrounding town, a favorite event at the Civic Center when he was a kid, his go-to restaurant for dinner with his wife, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I’m Tyler Whitney and I have the distinct pleasure of serving as the Executive Director of Southern Adirondack Independent Living in Queensbury. I live in Fort Ann with my wife Heather and step-son Hunter. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t mention Miley and Maggie, our two black labs, and our two cats, Jeter and Judge. If you can’t tell already, we are a Yankee household!

You will most often find me with my family, watching Hunter play baseball with the Spa City Stallions, or volunteering in the community. I currently serve with the Fort Ann Rescue Squad in an effort to help my neighbors in need and enjoy time with friends. During football season, you will find me begging the Buffalo Bills to get to a Super Bowl and always planning a way to get to Buffalo to watch them live.

I fell in love with the city of Glens Falls through SAIL. SAIL originated as the “Glens Falls Independent Living Center” in the early ‘90s on Sherman Avenue, serving the greater Glens Falls Region with only a part-time Executive Director. The mission was to help Glens Falls become more accessible, something that has not wavered through our evolution to a multi-program center, staffed by 40 employees serving 17 counties across New York State.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I grew up with my parents and sister in Hadley-Luzerne and my family and I now own a home and reside in Fort Ann. The constant about both of these locations is Glens Falls.  This is where my family meets for dinner or to grocery shop and spend time in a city that we love.

I am a graduate of SUNY Adirondack and stayed living local while I completed my BA at the University of Albany. I spent many hours at the Crandall Library studying!

Glens Falls is the center of everything. If you live in a surrounding town, Glens Falls is what keeps you grounded. The Farmers Market, grocery stores, restaurants – it’s where it all is!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

I can remember enjoying many days in the city of Glens Falls with my family as a kid, either exploring Crandall Park or catching a show at the Glens Falls Civic Center. I have loved watching the evolution of downtown as it continues to be revitalized and become a tourism destination.

Rude Betty is a top favorite of mine for Glens Falls! Every time I go in, I find another treasure that I need for someone as a gift. While it is always well attended, I still believe that the Crandall Park launch during the Balloon Festival is a blast and to me, a hidden gem!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day starts with bagels from Glens Falls Bagels and then coffee from Spot Coffee. My family and I would then make our way down Glen Street, shopping at local stores or hitting up the Farmers Market. I love spending time in the park with my family, enjoying the sun and playing ball. My wife and I will forever enjoy dinner at Morgan and Co. and finishing it off with dessert at Farmacy!

On the Past

My favorite Glens Falls memory would be a Harlem Globetrotters game I went to as a young child with my sister. I can remember walking into the Glens Falls Civic Center as if it were Madison Square Garden. I remember the feeling of awe as I watched the players throw the ball around, and “Globie” the mascot running around and playing tricks on the audience. I will never forget the feeling that I had during that game. As I drive by today, it is often the first memory I think of.

On the Future

If I could wave a wand and bring anything to the city of Glens Falls, it wouldn’t be a space or new restaurant — it would be acceptance and accessibility. From the work that I do helping people live independently within their own communities, I see firsthand the difficulties that individuals with disabilities face each day. Having a community that promotes independence and accessibility allows for all to enjoy and for all to thrive, living within the city that they love.

My Glens Falls: Alina Rosu

This week we chatted with Alina Rosu, who you may recognize as co-manager of the Lake George Olive Oil Company downtown! She shares what brought her to this area from her hometown in Romania, her favorite date night spot downtown, a restaurant that she remembers fondly from one of her first visits to Glens Falls, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Alina Rosu, and I co-manage the Lake George Olive Oil Company in Glens Falls and Lake George. I also own a small business, Herbal Alchemy Handcrafted Bodycare, where I can fully channel my creativity and passion into formulating unique artisan soaps, bodycare products and soy candles. I find so much joy and satisfaction in creating bodycare products using only high quality olive oils, natural oils and butters.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I was born and raised in a small town in Romania, around lots of traditions and simplicity that have remained with me for the rest of my life.

While in college in 2015, I took a leap of faith and applied for a work visa in the United States. When I was presented with areas in the country that would offer employment opportunities, Lake George was on that list. At that time, I didn’t know anything about the area, but after seeing it on Google Maps I knew I had to come see it in real life. I secured a position in the service industry and I was so happy and excited to explore the areas around Lake George.

In my time off from my work in Lake George, I used to come to Glens Falls for a casual stroll downtown or a bite to eat at a wonderful restaurant back then called Rare Earth.

Back in 2015, when I first visited Glens Falls, I remember seeing a beautiful small town with great restaurants and businesses and so much potential that had yet to be explored.

I started working at the Lake George Olive Oil Company in Glens Falls in 2016, my family-in-law owns it and they were happy to offer me the opportunity. I’ve seen Glens Falls grow in such a wonderful way in these past 7 years.

I currently rent a wonderful home in Lake George, but I’ve been considering purchasing my first future home in or around Glens Falls. There are so many wonderful neighborhoods and there is so much potential here.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

I love that Glens Falls has a supportive business community, lots of great places to eat and young energy being put into all of the new projects that have been happening lately.

The murals around downtown are absolutely amazing and they bring such a unique artistic feeling to Glens Falls. I love the artwork of Hannah Williams, and her mural on Warren Street is such a beautiful expression of appreciation towards Mother Earth.

I love having the Charles R. Wood Theater downtown. I feel like it is such a great way to experience the community and support it at the same time.

There are so many great boutique shops downtown that need more support from the community. We are so glad to see Rude Betty moved on Glen Street — it widens the variety of shopping that people can do before or after grabbing a nice dinner at one of the restaurants downtown.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day in Glens Falls would start with a stop at Kru Coffee for a delicious almond milk caramel latte, then it would continue by stopping at the library to grab a new book. From there, I would get a delicious vegan sandwich from Rock Hill Bakehouse and enjoy it with my husband in City Park. I also love going to the new Park & Elm Market for delicious gourmet treats.

My favorite place for a dinner date is [farmacy] restobar. I love their cocktails along with a nice oyster appetizer and their delicious entrées.

On the Past

Glens Falls reminds me a little bit of my hometown. The sense of community here is a lot more obvious though, and I love to see places that hold a little bit of the history of Glens Falls being revived. The Shirt Factory is definitely a great place that combines a little bit of history with great new energy and diversity from so many different artists.

On the Future

I love all the street festivals that take place in Glens Falls already, like LARAC, Wing Fest, and Take-a-Bite. I think that an all year round street festival series where the restaurants and small businesses in downtown would come together and show what they do best every week, would create so much more excitement and connection within downtown. Bringing more people out and about by creating unique events would make Glens Falls a great place to experience year round.

My Glens Falls: Miriam Weisfeld

We caught up with Miriam Weisfeld this week, who you’ll likely recognize as the Producing Artistic Director of the Adirondack Theatre Festival! She shares the joys of renovating an old city home (with quite the history!), the kindness of Glens Falls neighbors, the importance of community in helping build back the arts post-pandemic, and more…

On Life In Glens Falls

I’m Miriam Weisfeld, the Producing Artistic Director of the Adirondack Theatre Festival. I'm originally from Detroit. When I was in high school I got to see some amazing Red Wings games broadcast by the great Dave Strader. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to live in many of the world's great theatre capitals: London, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Moscow, NYC, Washington DC, Minneapolis, NYC again, and then the gig at ATF brought us to Glens Falls.

On Great Neighbors

Shortly after we moved here, we discovered what incredibly special neighbors we have here in Glens Falls. It was the spring of 2022. The professional performing arts were struggling to rebuild from the devastating effects of the pandemic. I was preparing to lead my first season at ATF and my husband Joe Isenberg, who is a fight director in the opera world, was injured in a hit-and-run and nearly lost his leg. Suddenly, I was coordinating his multiple surgeries in NYC while caring for our daughter Nina, who was adjusting to elementary school at Kensington, and I was producing a theatre festival that was still recovering from countless post-pandemic challenges.

We’d only just met our Glens Falls neighbors, but they immediately had our backs: mowing our lawn, taking out our dog, and cheering Joe on as he re-learned how to walk, and then to run, and then to swordfight again. Joe has now made a miraculous recovery and he’s back to choreographing at the Metropolitan Opera. We honestly couldn’t have done it without the kindness and encouragement of the other families on our block.

On The Joys of Renovation

After a wild 2022, we’re excited to finally tackle the house projects we’ve been planning since we moved in. Our 1870’s house has a fascinating mythology. Apparently, it was originally built in what is now Crandall Park. When the park was created, the house was lifted off its foundation, put on a horse drawn wagon, and moved across Glen Street to a new lot. We had a great time learning about it from our wonderful realtor, Julie Snyder. Now we’re renovating it room by room. Each time we finish a room, we send Julie photos. We love to hear her “ooh” and “ah!” at the refinished floors, the new sheetrock, the fresh paint.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

After all that work, we like treating ourselves to dinner at one of the great spots downtown — Davidson Brothers, Downtown City Tavern, or Craft on 9 — and then sip cocktails on the gorgeous porch at Morgan & Co or around the firepit at Park 26. We love looking out on the treasures of our little town: City Park, Crandall Library, the Arts District. Glens Falls is a great illustration of how artists, foodies, and entrepreneurs can work hand-in-hand to create a unique and thriving civic life.

On the Past

I love the stories from the 1990’s about how the Adirondack Theatre Festival helped to drive the rebirth of downtown Glens Falls: how ATF’s founders, David Turner and Martha Banta, produced a season of shows in the old Woolworth’s Five-and-Dime and then worked with Partners for Progress to help transform it into the Charles R. Wood Theater. The Wood is now such an iconic presence in Glens Falls. ATF is fortunate to be the anchor tenant and to continue that symbiotic relationship with the Wood Theater.

On the Future

If last year taught me anything, it’s that recovery takes a village. That goes for the US arts sector, too. Since the pandemic, Broadway alone has lost two million audience members. But we’re coming back. This season, Adirondack Theatre Festival’s subscribers have increased by 20%. That’s almost unheard of. Our community is with us. And every community member counts. Everyone who buys a ticket, or pledges a sponsorship, or urges a friend to see a show is helping us build back to our full capacity to challenge, entertain, and nourish audiences in this very special corner of the world.

[Editor’s Note: Here is a link to view the season lineup and purchase ATF tickets, if you’re interested!]

My Glens Falls: John Coleman

We caught up with John Coleman (and his adorable pup, Dobbs!) this week! He shares some favorite East Field memories, a couple of go-to local trails for a bike ride, where you might catch him playing guitar around town, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hi, my name is John Coleman. I’m a freelance graphic designer, musician, and dog dad to a 12-week old puppy named Dobbs.

In addition to running my own design business, John Coleman Design, I am also Art Director of Mountain Gazette, a bi-annual, print-only outdoor magazine, and I play guitar and sing at a handful of places in town (Fenimore’s Pub at The Queensbury Hotel, Flight Wine Bar, and Mean Max).

On Life In Glens Falls

I was born and raised on the east end of Glens Falls and have remained here, primarily, my entire life. I went to elementary school at St. Mary’s until grade 7 when I transferred to Glens Falls Middle School. I graduated from Glens Falls High School in 2003 and attended college at SUNY Plattsburgh where I studied Magazine Journalism and Graphic Design and played baseball for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals.

I moved back to Glens Falls after college to take a job as a marketing writer at The Post-Star newspaper and later joined the editorial team as a community news reporter. I went on to work as a marketing coordinator at Finch Paper for three years before landing my first full-time graphic design job at Trampoline Design, where I worked for five years and gained a lot of experience from the awesome team there.

I was very fortunate to find good work locally without having to take a common route for graphic designers — which is to first get an internship (sometimes non-paying) at a big agency in New York City before getting a full-time designer gig. I was also lucky that a lot of my close friends found well-paying jobs in the area and settled down here to raise their families. Some of my favorite memories were the years after college, camping and fishing with friends in the Adirondacks. Once I discovered all the Adirondacks had to offer – I saw no reason to ever leave.

I have owned homes in the city — both Glens Falls and Queensbury — but I’m currently renting an apartment downtown. It’s great to be so close to the action, although I often miss the peace and quiet of owning a home.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls is the range of options for arts, music and dining; but mainly the incredible access to the outdoors – whether it’s a quick nature trail walk or bike ride – while still being able to be at a High Peaks trailhead or trout stream in less than an hour.

Sweet Side Records is a Glens Falls hidden gem. It’s so cool to have a record shop with a knowledgeable staff in town.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day is walking the dog through Crandall Park, stopping into Kru Coffee to grab coffee, chat with friends and maybe answer some emails; then I’d probably head to Gurney Lane or Rush Pond for a bike ride. I’d grab dinner at Raul’s or Farmacy, see a show at the Park Theater, then stop into Mean Max for a pint and darts.

On the Past

I have so many great memories here. Some of my favorites are night skiing with friends at West Mountain, going to Adirondack Red Wings games at the (then) Civic Center, and watching Adirondack Lumberjacks games and going to Summer Jam at East Field. Attention Mayor Collins: bring back Summer Jam!

On the Future

We have a lot these days — a TON more than when I was a kid; but I second what my friend Chris Ristau said when he was interviewed by Glens Falls Living: I miss having a book store downtown. I feel like they add a lot to the fabric of a city, and it’d be great to attract an independent bookstore like Northshire Books. I feel like we’re all set on bars!

My Glens Falls: Sara DiLandro

This week we caught up with Sara DiLandro — a third generation Glens Falls gal! She shares the inspiration behind her newly formed not-for-profit — The GFCSD Backpack Program, what she loves about her 100 year old Glens Falls colonial, and some great ideas for youth recreation spaces in the city…

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Sara DiLandro (Landry) and I live in Glens Falls with my husband, Joe, and our two kids, Will (12) and Ellie (9).

I am the founder and Board President of the newly formed not-for-profit, The GFCSD Backpack Program. Our program ensures that no Glens Falls City School District student faces food insecurity over the weekend or over school breaks. Some students rely on the meals provided at school as their main food source. It is sad to think that while most kids come to school to learn, some come to eat. I don't think a lot of people realize that. I was an elementary teacher for 15 years and have seen the impact these kinds of programs can have on kids. Our program sends bags of food home at the end of every week to 155 students (and counting) in the school district. Each bag contains food that is easy to open and prepare, keeping in mind that some of the kids in our program may live in temporary housing, such as a motel. The program is run by amazing local volunteers and is completely donation based. Our local community has been so generous to us. We have individuals and families that sponsor students for the year and many local businesses that hold food drives for us. I could never do this without all of the support.  When I left teaching in 2019, I began focusing on giving back to my community, specifically helping the kids that live here, for they are the future of our great little city.

[Editor’s Note: Here is a link to donate to the Backpack Program, if you’re so inclined!]

On Life In Glens Falls

I am a 3rd generation Glens Falls gal! Both sets of my grandparents grew up here and my parents both grew up here. My parents still live in the first house they bought together that I grew up in.

I attended Jackson Heights for elementary school and graduated from Glens Falls High School. Of my 15 first cousins, 12 of us graduated from Glens Falls and still live here. In fact, many of us live within a mile of each other now and our kids go to school together.

After I graduated from college, my husband and I moved to Connecticut for 2 years for his job. We found ourselves coming home every weekend to visit family and friends and when we wanted to start our own family, we knew it was going to be back home. It is pretty special to have a ski mountain just a few miles away and also be able to visit Lake George and Saratoga in just a few minutes.

We own an over 100 year old colonial on Roosevelt Avenue. It has had some updates over the years, but I love some of the home's original features like the glass doorknobs and built-ins.

I love that Glens Falls has sidewalks surrounding all of the homes here. It really encourages a sense of community. I also love that we live in a walking school district, which is really rare, and that we have neighborhood elementary schools. My neighborhood is filled with many Glens Falls alumni too. It is great to see so many of us continue to call Glens Falls home.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect day in Glens Falls changes with the seasons, but usually starts for me at our local YMCA where I both teach and take fitness classes. We are so lucky to have our own YMCA that offers so many programs for all ages in our community. Afterward, I usually walk our dogs over to Crandall Park, which is another gem for our city that just keeps getting better!

In the summer, a Saturday isn't complete without a trip to the Glens Falls Farmers’ Market. We visit Crandall Library every week, attend shows at the Wood Theatre, and enjoy the seasonal events and festivities that take place downtown every year.

When it comes to going out to eat as a family, we love to eat at Fenimore's. It has been amazing to watch The Q be transformed to what it is today. Our go to date night spot is sitting at the bar at Radici, or in the summer — sitting on the porch at Morgan & Co.

In the winter, you can find us at the Glens Falls Rec Center most of the time, where my son plays hockey for Adirondack Youth Hockey. He has kids on his team that come from all over, and we are so fortunate to have our very own rink in town!

On the Past

One of my favorite memories growing up here was walking to school each morning. I was lucky enough to live a block away from my grandparents growing up and every morning, as I crossed Ridge Street on my way to Jackson Heights, my grandma would wave to us from her window. My grandparents have both since passed away, but her house is still in our family. Even when I pass it today, I can picture her in that window, smiling and waving.

On the Future

This city has had some amazing improvements over the years, but like everything, there is always more that can be done.

I think we could use some updates in our youth recreation spaces. I grew up riding my bike to The Glens Falls Tennis and Swim Club almost everyday in the summer. I loved it there and it saddens me anytime I drive by it and see it so run down. It would be great to have something like that again, or a nice updated community pool, similar to Gurney Lane, that families could easily walk or bike to. Our Glens Falls Little League fields over at East Field are in need of some improvements to accommodate the close to 400 kids in our community that play Glens Falls Rec baseball and softball.

It would also be great to see a new hockey facility. Youth hockey has become so big in our area, with over 600 kids in the program, but the Glens Falls Rec Center still looks like it did when I was little, and our area has way outgrown that space. The rink is shared with other schools too, and ice time is hard to come by. It would be great to see a new facility built with a couple of ice rinks and maybe even a restaurant. I think it would bring a lot of business to the area if we were able to hold big hockey tournaments here. With tournaments, you have families from all over not only the state, but the whole Northeast. Having a nice facility to hold tournaments in would mean more people staying in our local hotels and shopping and dining at our local businesses.

With or without these improvements, I honestly can't imagine living anywhere else.

My Glens Falls: Serena Smith

This week we’re chatting with Serena Smith, who you may recognize from Hot Yoga Queensbury! She shares the importance of movement in her life and how she decided to make it her full time job, her go-to spot for cocktails downtown, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hi, my name is Serena Smith. I’m the new proprietor and instructor at Hot Yoga Queensbury located at 118 Quaker Road.

I’m new to this area but have grown very fond of it. I was born and raised in the mountains of Vermont where outdoor activities were always number one on my to-do list. I would say my sister was the one that inspired me to move my body. She was always the one motivating me, inspiring me to do more, and pushing me to be a better version of myself.

I have always been a runner before I found yoga. I have completed the Vermont Marathon four times, the 100 on 100 four times, several half marathons and many 5Ks all over New England.

I love traveling, and I try to go to a new place at least once a year. I always bring my running shoes because I believe running or walking a new place is the best way to see what it can offer you and makes exploring way more fun. My running shoes now share the suitcase with a yoga outfit. I hate flying but I bear it for the experiences on the other end of the flight. I also love the food scene, craft cocktails and a tasty glass of red wine with a local dish.

Prior to taking over the yoga studio, I was in the food service industry. I opened my own restaurant in Poultney, Vermont in 2012, which is where I met my husband Jon. Meeting him was my motivation to eventually move across state lines. Although my restaurant thrived as a take-out only restaurant during COVID, it became clear to me that the time I was missing out on with family to be at the restaurant 24/7 was not how I wanted to spend the second part of my life.

It took some time to find my next path, but I finally made it to the start of my next journey. I taught at Hot Yoga Queensbury for several years before the conversation of purchasing the amazing space came up. It made me realize I wanted to make movement my full-time job. The Queensbury/Glens Falls area is thriving, and is so lovely and full of community. I am excited to be a part of it.

On Lake Life

My husband and I bought the family home in Huletts where we have lived together for 10 years. Living on the lake is such a gift and we never take it for granted. We love spending our free time on and in the water during the summer. We also love biking, which is a newer hobby that we discovered during COVID. When we’re not on the water, you can find us biking, hiking or wandering Glens Falls looking for a drink and a snack. There is so much happening and it is exciting to see.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

There are so many versions of the perfect Glens Falls day. It really depends on the season. Let’s go with the perfect Glens Falls summer day. I would start out with taking or teaching Yoga or Pilates at Hot Yoga Queensbury with Jon. Then we’d head on down to Kru Coffee to get my oat milk with honey lavender matcha, the Big BLT for Jon and the Spicy Vegetarian for myself.

After finishing that up we’d walk down to the Farmers’ Market to get some fresh local goods from all of the amazing farmers in the area. Then we’d head on over to Crandall Library to get a new book to read for the week and see what event might be going on in the park. Afterwards, we’d stroll to Minky Mink to treat myself to a new outfit or piece of jewelry.

In the afternoon we’d meet up with some yoga buddies and take the bikes on the bike path to enjoy the sunshine and local views. Once we had our fill of the Adirondack sunshine, we’d pack up the bikes and head to Park & Elm for one of Ethan’s famous cocktail creations. Then we’d go to Farmacy for dinner, ending with the most delicious donut dessert. After having our fill of food and beverages, finding some local music would round off my version of a perfect Glens Falls summer day.

On the Past

The communities I grew up in were always so small and loving but didn’t have much going on and you had to drive for hours to get to anything. Small businesses are the foundation of any community and I like when they create the back bone of a neighborhood like they do here.

On the Future

I feel like the future of Glens Falls is bright and exciting. What else can you add to Glens Falls? Besides more people to enjoy it with, more music and arts festivals would be amazing. It would also be lovely to see a local book store so I can add to my cookbook collection.

My Glens Falls: John Reed

This week we caught up with John Reed! He shares the circuitous route he took to his current career in the brewing industry (Common Roots, to be exact), his go-to walking route with his pups, a super fun idea for a city bar crawl, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is John Reed - hiker, avid sports fan, dog lover and Quality Control & Operations Manager at Common Roots Brewing Company. My role at the brewery focuses on day to day operations in the brewery, as well as conducting all the chemical and microbiological testing we do to make sure our liquid is consistent and delicious every time. I also work Sundays at (g)row for kids, telling stories and selling awesome kids gear (and buying some to spoil my nieces and nephews!) As a former teacher and the third oldest of 25 cousins, conducting story time at 11:00 is always a riot!

I studied biology at Boston College and took a circuitous route to the brewing industry. I've worked in clinical research at Dana Farber in Boston, taught biology to students from 6th-12th grade in Connecticut and South Carolina and wound up back in upstate New York as a chance to be closer to family and pursue my interests.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

Glens Falls is the perfect balance of what I want in my life.

I love hiking in the mountains and staying active - it's perfect that I can be hiking in Lake George or Moreau in minutes and less than an hour and a half from the high peaks regions. And with rock climbing gyms, driving ranges, bike paths and Crandall Park minutes away from my home, I can easily meet up with friends for active hang outs (literally - rock climbing!) or take my dogs (a 10yr old Dalmatian named Perdi, and a 12 yr old Australian Shepherd mix named Harvey) for a walk through the park and the trails at Cole Woods.

I love food and beverages! I was a member of Real Food Boston College as an undergraduate and spent a lot of time talking about the importance of meals both through the lens of it being a social necessity for people to bond over and as a means to practice local environmental responsibility and sustainability. And it's awesome to be around so many restaurants, the brewery included, that bring people together over locally, responsibly sourced, delicious food.

I love my family and friends! I looked for new experiences in different areas of the country in my twenties and the experiences have helped shape me. But, living in South Carolina, I was much too far away from my nieces and nephews and core group of friends. Here, I can see cousins, grandparents, aunt and uncles, siblings, friends from the brewery, friends from home, friends from college - and all within a few hours. It means a lot to me to be able to be present in their lives and share experiences, not just over FaceTime, but in person.

On Homeownership

I own a house in Glens Falls just a couple blocks from Crandall Park. I love being able to walk there, being able to walk downtown, to walk to friends houses. It was definitely a fixer upper, but had some of the key things I was looking for - particularly a big fenced in backyard for the pups and updated electrical and heating. It has been a process though. I have replaced every floor and subfloor in the house, ripped several rooms down to the studs to run new electrical and put up new drywall, replaced appliances, redid countertops, added a cement patio - you name it! It's nice to have a job that has taught me a few handy skills, as well as being lucky enough to have friends and family with skills and generosity to pitch in whenever I have needed it.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

As a relatively new resident of three years, I'm still discovering what Glens Falls has to offer while it continues to grow. I love Crandall Park and having access to trails, a disc golf course, basketball courts, concert series, ice skating in the winter - all a two minute walk from my house. I love having an amazing library right downtown and the fact that the Wood Theater brought the Banff Film Festival to my city. I love seeing new restaurants pop up and draw crowds and be successful. I love that we have unique shopping like (g)row, Fountain Square Outfitters, Sweet Side Records - there's something for everyone.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

A perfect day in Glens Falls starts by brewing a few cups of pour over Kru Kona coffee at home for me and my girlfriend to enjoy in the morning sun on the patio while the dogs run around in the backyard. It is very likely that we head into town to grab a cheese danish from Kru in person and a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel from Glens Falls Bagels to snack on before making moves for the day.

We leash up all three dogs (my two, and her mini labradoodle Kingsley) and head towards Crandall Park and Cole Woods to get our steps in. I like to cut across the bridges over the pond first, through the field by the playground before making a loop through the woods and coming back by the basketball courts. My dogs love to walk, but a couple miles at their age is great exercise and a perfect recipe for an afternoon full of napping.

While the dogs snooze, we head across the bridge to meet up with friends and family at Common Roots to sample some of my work and grab a quick bite, especially if Dustin has a taco special running. We'd park downtown to pop into Fountain Square and see if anything calls to us for our quest for all 46 High Peaks this year and over to Sweet Side to grab a Wood Brother's album to throw on the record player.

After a nap of our own (I might love a good power nap as much as my dogs), it's time to have the debate about what type of food we're feeling for dinner. Sushi, Mexican, Wood-Fired, Italian? Oyster apps and perfectly filling handmade pasta at Radici is calling to me. If we're feeling motivated, we'll walk back to burn some of the calories from the food-filled day behind us and text Christian & Mel to see if the kids are asleep and they're awake for a cocktail and a whiskey on their back porch to close the night. So much accomplished, so much food eaten, so much company enjoyed. A great day in Glens Falls.

On the Past

Something friends and family have done in the past and that I would love to make a tradition is a house based bar crawl. With so many people within walking distance of each other in Glens Falls, getting a group of people to share an experience in town - walking, talking, eating, laughing, drinking together - brings together a lot of my favorite things in one!

On the Future

Every time I tried to think of something I would like in town, I realized that it already exists - there are golf courses and driving ranges within 10 minutes, rock climbing/bike trails/hiking within 10 minutes, great food and drink within walking distance... That said, I am very excited to check out Go Play With Your Food on Glen Street! Game nights have always been a part of my life - I think the idea of location where we can grab a table, something to eat and drink and pick from a huge variety of board games instead of just our go to options from our collections sounds awesome.

My Glens Falls: Maria Pelton

We’re catching up with Maria Pelton this week! She shares what brought her here from a very small Vermont town (population 600!), the joys of fixing up a 120+ year old Glens Falls home, and as a dog fanatic, the one thing she’d like to see in the city in the future…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Maria Pelton and I am a professional wedding officiant and baker. I grew up in a very small town in Southern Vermont (population of roughly 600) where my parents owned the only general store in town and I attended a one-room schoolhouse through 6th grade. I am the youngest of four siblings with my parents having adopted three of us, all of a different nationality than them.

I live here in Glens Falls with my partner of 6 years, Christopher Crowd, and have one daughter, Marlee, who's getting ready to graduate from Ithaca College in a month.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

My siblings and I grew up coming to Glens Falls as young children. Although we lived in Vermont, my family were members of the Glens Falls YMCA, coming to Glens Falls every Tuesday and Thursday. My sister and I would take swimming lessons while my brothers would be in karate or other various classes, my mom would do nautilus (I still remember when it used to be to the right when you first walked in the front doors), and my dad, John Pelton, would go on long runs with his friends — now often referred to as "The Legend" by his running friends, he was a competitive runner for many years.

When my daughter was 7 years old we landed in Glens Falls to live as I began working for Travelers Insurance, where I was employed for 14 years. I absolutely love this area. We rented for roughly 7 years before I purchased the home that we now live in in 2014. I'm very much a DIY'er and have done a ton of work on our home, which was built in 1900. Painting, and more painting, installing flooring, replacing windows, installing light fixtures, landscaping, you name it! I've always found it exciting to work through the process and see the end result.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

I'd have to say my favorite thing about Glens Falls is the food scene. I went to culinary school and graduated in 1997 from the New England Culinary Institute in Essex Junction, VT. I'm a foodie, and Glens Falls has made a mark on the food scene. From Morgan & Co. to Radici, Mint to Gourmet Cafe; there's something to satisfy most people's taste buds.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day...well, it would definitely begin with a stop at Park & Elm Market for one of their delicious breakfast wraps. Then it would be off to the Shirt Factory to explore the many great businesses that fill such a beautiful structure. A quick stop at Gourmet Cafe to grab one of their delicious sandwiches or salads, and then it's off on a walk through Crandall Park. A before dinner cocktail at Fenimore’s before heading to dinner at Morgan & Co., where we can always be guaranteed a great meal. And perhaps finishing it off with a nightcap at Radici.

On the Past

That would have to be the Civic Center — I just can't get used to calling it the Cool Insuring Arena. When I was younger I remember big names coming to "little" Glens Falls to perform at the Civic Center. I still remember coming to see WWE wrestling with my best friend and her mother. At the time they were big fans, and I had never seen it except on television. What an experience!

On the Future

I do believe that Glens Falls is already looking to the future, but if I could speed things up a bit I'd have to say that I'd love to see a dog park. I am a dog fanatic; and I mean fanatic. And although we don't currently own any dogs of our own, you will often see me walking with a dog around our neighborhood as we watch dogs for friends and family. A dog park could be a great addition to this area.

My Glens Falls: Maria Nissi

This week we chatted with Maria Nissi! She shares the sweet story of their home’s history (and the power of a neighborhood hello!), as well as the top three things that influenced her to move back to Glens Falls — not once, but twice!

Tell us about yourself!

Hi there! I’m Maria, and I live in Glens Falls with my husband, Joe Haun, and our two kiddos, Joey (10 this week) and Flannery (almost 7).

I’m an independent college advisor, which means I support high school students and their parents through the college search and admissions process. My goal is to turn an often stressful period into one of self-discovery, where the student owns the process and gets excited about the next big phase of their lives. Many of my students are local, but I also work remotely with students from all over the country.

My job requires me to be a lifelong student of colleges (not in the way I wish, as in my college years never ending!) - so I try to visit at least one campus whenever I leave the area.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I’m not originally from Glens Falls, but within the span of ten years, I moved back twice. How’s that for Hometown USA love? I’m originally from another river city called Haverhill, MA, and I’ve also lived in NYC, South America, and Montana before settling in upstate NY.

There is so much to love about Glens Falls. For me, it hits the trifecta: great schools, beautiful public spaces, and awesome people.

The Schools: There’s something special about every child living within walking distance of their elementary school and moving up to a centrally located middle and high school. I’m not a city planner, but I am certain this design cultivates community! The Glens Falls teachers and administrators truly care about the kids both inside and outside of the classroom. It’s been great to watch my own children and the high schoolers I work with flourish as a result of the supportive environment they show up to every day.

The Parks: We live across the street from Crandall Park and Cole’s Woods and spend a ton of time there playing soccer and pickleball, shooting hoops, and cross-country skiing under the lights. I think of the energy of Crandall Park, Cole’s Woods, and the YMCA as the collective heartbeat of the city.

And The People: We were still unpacking the moving truck when our neighbors showed up to introduce themselves and exchange phone numbers in case we needed anything. I also live two doors down from my best friend of 25 years and therefore consider myself the luckiest person in the world.

We own a sturdy old colonial on Fort Amherst. I wouldn’t call her a fixer-upper, but she’s a work in progress. My husband is a historic preservationist, so living in a construction zone is a marital hazard! Our house has a special history, which I’ll get to next.

On the Past

A favorite Glens Falls moment happened about five years ago, a few days after we moved into our house. Our neighbors, Ann and Chirp, both in their late 80s at the time and newly married, rang our doorbell and handed us a welcome present. Talking to us like old friends, Ann told us how she had raised her children in our house. About 30 years ago, when her kids had grown, she and her late husband built the house across the street, where she and Chirp now lived.

Soon after, we met Ann’s son Michael, who gave us old photographs documenting some renovations and told us more about the house’s history. Ann and Chirp have both since passed away, and Joe and I feel lucky that they welcomed us into their lives when they did. Oh, the power of a hello!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in and around the city is a typical Saturday in the winter. I head to my office at WorkSmart for a couple of hours to meet with a student or two, pick up the kids from morning sports, and head to Gore to meet friends on the mountain. If we’re not too exhausted, we grab dinner at Fenimore’s and let the kids run around the lobby of The Q while Ray plays piano.

On the Future

If I could magically bring one thing to Glens Falls, it would be an outdoor community pool. I grew up going to a local swim club, the summer hub of recreation and water sports for the town. Maybe someday we can bring back something like the old Glens Falls Swim and Tennis Club!

My Glens Falls: Chris Ristau

This week, we caught up with Chris Ristau, who you’ll likely recognize as Executive Director at The Park Theater. He shares what continues to draw him to Glens Falls, some fond memories of businesses we likely all miss downtown, a concert series he’s looking forward to, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hello there! My name is Chris Ristau and I find myself wearing many hats. Most notably, I’m husband to the greatest gal in all the land, Mrs. Carly Schiavone, and dog dad to a mutt named Gizmo.

In Glens Falls I have the privilege of holding the title of Executive Director of The Park Theater Foundation, a non-profit that operates The Park Theater’s community entertainment (a wide variety of concerts spanning genres from jazz and folk to classical and rock-and-roll and comedy, too!) as well as education initiatives that we’ve just kicked off within the Glens Falls City School District with hopes to expand to neighboring districts in the near future.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

Despite spending the vast majority of my time in Glens Falls now and in the past, I’ve never lived within the city limit. I grew up on the east side of Lake George in Pilot Knob at the foot of Buck Mountain and went to school at Lake George. Not much of a winter sports person, I found myself drawn to Glens Falls to pass the time during the chilly season and have always been enamored with all the little city has to offer.

College brought me to (then) ACC and later SUNY Oneonta, where I met my Carly and received my degree in Music Industry. I was pleased to find a music studio and lesson space called the Glens Falls Music Academy, where I completed my internship and was hired on as Studio Manager - getting to know local music educators and students (many of whom are professional musicians that have played at The Park!), teaching clarinet lessons, organizing recitals at The Hyde Collection and sitting in on some recording sessions. I even recorded an album of my own with The WonderBeards!

After a brief stint in the non-profit art world in Troy, the opportunity arose at The Park Theater to become the Front of House Manager.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Throughout my life in this area I’ve been thankful for what Glens Falls offers and represents. From the many arts organizations, to the growing craft beverage and dining businesses, there’s always something to do or enjoy. It’s also conveniently located between my current home in Ballston Lake and my parents’ place in Lake George.

Glens Falls is more than just a sum of its parts with so many people working together - and so many of them volunteering - to make it what it is today, with a vision to keep improving, growing, and overcoming obstacles. There’s a certain magic in seeing a city change over time, and in being a part of that growth and all that lies ahead. There’s so much here, I just never felt the need to leave, and it’s why I am in this city more than I am in my own home.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I love the great outdoors, and you don’t have to leave the city to experience some great trails in Coles Woods or the Feeder Canal Trail. After a run or a ride, a stop at Kru Coffee to rest and caffeinate is a must before stocking up on some new gear for the next outdoor adventure at Fountain Square Outfitters and laughing out loud while shopping for some gifts at Rude Betty.

If I’m not too tuckered out from all the activity in the morning, I love showing off all the new public art along the Arts Trail, which spans from the Chapman Museum to the Hyde Collection and features those beautiful new murals off the circle and plenty more along the way.

In the peak of the summertime, you can’t go wrong during Take a Bite where you can make a meal sampling from the best of all our downtown restaurants (and beyond!). But I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to the team at Park & Elm that has been my work family since before outgrowing Doc’s Restaurant. Ethan is incredible behind the bar and Matt makes a mean…well…everything!

Beyond my across-the-street neighbors, I love the folks at [farmacy] for their creative dishes and stellar cocktails, and after one (or two) of those on a night out, Mean Max Brew Works is the perfect place to round out the night with a tried and true Artist Rock Red Ale (or for the more adventurous, the Rum Barrel Aged Pineapple Coconut Sour, which I’m mostly mentioning here in hopes they’ll bring it back!).

On the Past

As much as I’m happy for Matt Funiciello and the expansion of The Shirt Factory with the new Rock Hill Bakehouse, I do miss their old location on Exchange Street. And their old-old location on the circle. I had many moments playing their open-mic nights that gave me the confidence to play out on my own, meet friends to play with, and enjoy some delicious coffee and sammies along the way. The WonderBeards became "The WonderBeards" when Tom Miles and I became the hosts of said open-mic nights and later, the house band — in no small part due to the fact that my partner in musical crime had a literal hand in baking their bread.

And speaking of coffee, I met so many members of our community serving friends from Trampoline and the Glens Falls National Bank while I worked mornings at the North Country Coffee Cafe in the Empire Theater building on South Street. Fun fact: while I've always loved the aroma of a coffee shop and freshly ground beans, I never enjoyed a cup of java until I tried a Frappuccino, and then a Mocha, a Latte and now, a daily cup or two of that sweet nectar - black.

A couple honorable mentions — I certainly miss the old Red Fox bookstore and I don’t know why it left such an impression, but the Pungent Pod was a killer name for a store that for some reason sold sand-filled lizards and frogs that everyone who was a kid in the 90’s absolutely had to have.

On the Future

I’d love to see a new local bookstore back in town and I’m just very excited for the transformation of South Street with the DRI Initiative. I think Glens Falls has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to — including the new Park Theater neighbors on the corner of Park & Glen, Go Play With Your Food.

Oh, By the Way…

Back when I was a student at ACC, before SUNY ADK times, I had the pleasure of taking a class with Jonathan Newell (who owns the Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls) and Nick Buttino (relatively recently retired ACC teacher and community leader) called simply, The Music Business. During that class, we were tasked with a project developing a concert series that later inspired the Summer Series Concerts at the Crandall Park Bandshell that the Park Theater Foundation now hosts. It’s hard for me to separate the business and personal these days because I love what I’m doing and where I’m able to do it, so — shameless plug to come check out our third season starting June 30th! See you downtown!

My Glens Falls: Shawn Weinberger

This week we caught up with Shawn Weinberger! He shares the trials and triumphs of fixing up an old house in the city, why Glens Falls neighbors are the best neighbors, his go to spot for dinner, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is Shawn Weinberger and I am the Client Services & HR Manager at KEENA in Queensbury. I joined KEENA in late 2020 (the start of some of the best decisions I have made) just after purchasing a home in Glens Falls with my now fiancée, Rheagan where we live with our two dogs, Rowan and Stella.

For those that don’t know, KEENA is a local Professional Employer Organization. You can think of us as an outside Human Resource department — we handle your employees; you handle your business.

On Life in Glens Falls

I grew up in South Glens Falls with my four siblings and my parents who all now live within a few minutes of each other. So moving across the bridge, or as my mom refers to it, a “day trip” away, was a pretty big deal (and I mean this sarcastically).

I loved growing up in a big family. My older sister was my first friend and is still one of my best friends today, which is probably why people refer to me as “Baked by Jordan’s brother.” I get it now. My three younger brothers were my teammates for every sport we wanted to play in the backyard, although most games wound up in a fight. We would quickly move on and all root for the Red Sox together to rub it in Poppy’s face, especially when it was against the Yankees. The theme here is family. They’re amazing.

Rheagan and I fell in love with a house just a short walk from where we were living at the time. Built in 1940, it looked every year as old as it was. All of the walls were covered in hideous wallpaper, outdated decor in every room and in desperate need of a fresh set of eyes to bring it back to life. After making an offer, we would take a detour most nights on our way home from work, just to talk about all the ideas we couldn’t wait to get started on. We quickly realized after moving in that some projects would have to wait (Rheagan is still working on this), after our water heater went and flooded the basement. Despite the setbacks, more than anything, we wanted to be “home proud.” Whenever our neighbors see us out front landscaping or bringing in more overpriced 2x4s, they always compliment us on the work we’ve done and tell us how amazing things are coming along. It’s such a great feeling knowing your long nights and weekends of work are noticed by people you barely know. So, I’m very proud.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in Glens Falls would start off by taking our dogs for a walk downtown to Kru Coffee to get a Chai latte before going over to Crandall Park for a few sets of tennis or a round of golf at any of the local courses. We’d then swing over to my parents' house to hang out by the pool with all my siblings, nieces and nephew. My dad and I would brew up another 10/10 beer that he’d put on tap in his basement bar, Cheezers. We’d get subs from Bean’s Country Store and Robyn’s famous ADK Lemonade, and then after a full day in the sun and a half dozen applications of sunscreen, we’d clean up and go to Farmacy for dinner. I’d make quick work of Rheagan in a few games of darts at Mean Max. Back at home, I’d whip up a couple mojitos with fresh mint from the garden and try to make it through Morgan Wallen’s 36 song album before one of us calls it quits from being eaten alive by the mosquitos.

Some Favorite Glens Falls Moments

Some of my favorite memories in Glens Falls have all been surrounding our home. A neighbor helping us plow the driveway after the first big snow storm. Another one dropping off some craft beer because of one quick conversation about a local brewery. We are so lucky to live in such a thoughtful community. My favorite memory of all was this past summer, proposing to Rheagan in our newly landscaped backyard and celebrating the night away with our closest friends.

We’re so happy we chose Glens Falls as our home.

My Glens Falls: Staci Oswald

We caught up with Staci Oswald this week! She shares some downtown favorites (as well as some favorites from her hometown of Granville, too!), a sweet memory of driving her babies home from the Snuggery, her go-to local breweries, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I'm Staci Oswald, owner of Staci Oswald Creative Photography & Design. My husband Karl and I have two sweet kiddos, Kaiser and Kayden, ages 5 and 3. Our youngest was born on the day before the world shut down on March 12, 2020. It's been a beautifully wild ride!

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I'm from Michigan originally, and my husband is from Clifton Park. We met and fell in love with the Glens Falls area, settling in Granville. We were drawn to the hometown feel and kindness of the community, and we're proud to now be raising our babies and business here!

We own a home in the village of Granville; it's such a sweet town with the kindest people! Our neighbors are always checking in on each other and helping to look out for one another.

Some Glens Falls Favorites

Glens Falls has everything you could want in a downtown area, and feels so down-to-earth and approachable. My favorite discovery has been Hovey Pond Park playground and the bike trails — I could spend all day walking and exploring! I've also been so thankful to have found the WorkSmart coworking space downtown. It's a great space for meetings and photoshoots!

…And Some Granville Favorites, Too

Our favorite Granville spots include Slate Town Brewing for a couple of pints — the beer is great, and the staff is incredible! We love taking the kids to Pember Library, and if it's summer, we'll head over to Jen's Pit Stop or Scarlotta's for some ice cream. If we're looking to have dinner out, we'll head to Slate Town Brewing or On the Rocks Pub, right across the street!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect Glens Falls day starts out with a chai latte at Spot Coffee (in fact, I'm sipping one as I write this!). We love taking the kids to Crandall Library, and are frequent fliers at the Crandall Park playground. On a rare date night, my husband and I love the beer and atmosphere at Mean Max Brew Works (All Fluffed Up is a favorite!), and my favorite yoga spot is Grounded on Glen Street. If we're dining out, we love Siam Thai for sushi and Downtown City Tavern for the beer selection and great food!

On the Past

Two of my favorite Glens Falls memories were taking our babies home from the Snuggery at Glens Falls Hospital. My husband drove the entire way home with the interior lights on so he could be sure to see the babies were safe in the back seat! So sweet.

On the Future

I'd love to see another brewery come to town, and it would be wonderful to have another place to take the kids to play indoors when the weather is chilly in the winter!

My Glens Falls: Claudia Cedrone

This week, we’re chatting with Claudia Cedrone! She shares what she loves most about her 1920 Glens Falls home, her go-to spot for pasta downtown, what inspired her to become a financial advisor, and more…

Claudia Cedrone // Photo: Briana Lyons for Glens Falls Living // Mural: Hannah Williams

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Claudia Cedrone and I am a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments. I grew up in Queensbury and now own a home in Glens Falls. I spend a lot of time with my family who also lives locally, including my parents, sister and two nephews. My father has been a financial advisor with Edward Jones for 25 years. I saw what an impact he made in the community and the relationships he built throughout his career and knew I always wanted to do that as well.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

My parents are originally from New York City and as kids they both vacationed up here. When they got married they decided to move to the area, which I am so grateful for. Growing up, I fell in love with our community through the many events and activities, including JDRF [Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation] walks, going to the Adirondack Ice Hawks games, dancing with the Dance Center of Queensbury, and performing the Nutcracker at the Wood Theater.

I went to SUNY Oswego for college, but always knew I wanted to come back to the area. I bought my home on Mason Street in Glens Falls two years ago. It was built in 1920 and I love all the details and character of the home. The previous owners had done a lot of renovations and it was move in ready, which was perfect! I love that there are all different styles of homes on Mason Street and that the bike path is right there. The thing I love most about my home is how close it is to the rest of Glens Falls. During the warmer months, I love biking to all the events that happen downtown like Take a Bite, Wing Fest, and LARAC.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My perfect day in Glens Falls would start with a 6am ride to Lake George on the bike path with my boyfriend, Clark (if it’s raining, we’d catch a cycling class at Kind Cycling!). After that, we’d get breakfast at Steve’s Place. Up next, we’d head home and and see what event is going on downtown or attend a yoga class at Grounded on Glen. Afterwards, I would go to my sister’s house to play with my nephews, Max and Milo, and take them to get some ice cream at Coopers Cave. For dinner I would meet my family at Gourmet Café and get one of their delicious salads or the pasta bar! I love that I can go to Gourmet Café and also get so many gluten free options, especially their desserts. Finally, I’d end the night at home with some sleepy time tea and cuddling with my cat Lightning (I am a big cat lover).

On the Past

My sister, Amanda Cedrone, is a type 1 diabetic and growing up we always participated in the JDRF walks out of Crandall Park and through the streets of Glens Falls. It was always very rewarding raising money for a great cause that meant a lot to my family.

I also remember attending an event commemorating the opening of Centennial Circle and riding in an old fashioned car around Glens Falls.

On the Future

One addition I would love in Glens Falls would be a Greek restaurant! I love Greek food and think it would be a good cultural addition.

My Glens Falls: Ben Miller

This week we caught up with Ben Miller, who you’ll likely recognize from Park Street Hospitality (soon to include the new Park & Elm restaurant and market!). He shares what brought him back to Glens Falls after a decade abroad, his go-to spot for a nightcap, his vision for the future of the city, and more.

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Ben Miller. I am the Operations Manager for Park Street Hospitality, the company that operates The Park Theater and Doc’s Restaurant. We are currently expanding to include our new restaurant and market concept - Park & Elm. I am also involved with a number of my family’s real estate development projects across the city.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

I grew up in Queensbury, but I left the area to attend university in Burlington, Vermont. From there I moved to the UK and then to Canada, living abroad for close to 10 years. I came back in March of 2020, just at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was something that I had been planning for quite awhile, but I didn’t really know when it would happen. The pandemic drove me to take a more active role in my family’s business ventures here in the city, and I am glad that it did. I have been rediscovering my hometown every day for the last two years.

For the last year I have been managing the development of a new mixed-use commercial/residential building at 15 Park Street. This building will host 10 residential units as well as our new restaurant and market. Part of that process has been designing my personal apartment. Overall, this has been a very challenging but rewarding project. Old buildings like this one have so much character, but certainly come with their challenges as well. Would it have been faster and cheaper to knock it down and start from scratch? Definitely, but in my opinion, these old buildings are one of the things that give our town so much charm. Hopefully these renovations will bring new life to this part of the city, so it can be enjoyed by generations to come!

Some Glens Falls Favorites

My favorite thing about Glens Falls has been watching this city grow. There was a point in my youth when I thought I would never want to come back to Glens Falls. I wanted something more exciting. Now, many of those amenities are right here at home - great restaurants, the arts, etc. We are also incredibly lucky to live just outside the Adirondacks. It can really feel like the best of both worlds.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

My ideal day starts on Saturday night, right after getting out of work. If I’m lucky, it’s early enough for my wife and I to grab dinner at any one of the great restaurants that we have in town these days. A rising tide lifts all boats, as they say. We try to support as many of our fellow restaurateurs and restaurant workers as we can.

We follow this up with live jazz and a nightcap at the Bourbon Room. Regardless of who is playing, it is always a treat to see such talent coming out of this city. The cocktails don’t hurt either!

The next morning I cook brunch, or maybe we pop in to Kerrie’s Northway Dinner. You’ve gotta love that old-school hometown charm. The staff there really are the best too. Either way, a cortado from Kru Coffee and a walk up to Crandall Park is always a great way to digest all of that French toast. A lazy Sunday afternoon brings us right back to supper, and time to start over again.

On the Past

My favorite Glens Falls memories take me back to the dinner table, with friends and family at Bistro Tallulah. I don’t think there are many in the local food and beverage industry that don’t know that name. For me, Sean Whalen’s restaurant was a revelation. It redefined what I thought Glens Falls was capable of, and went miles in paving the way for the current generation of restaurateurs in the city.

I also have more than a few hazy memories from the old $2 Thursdays at the Bullpen. Everyone was home from college…there was cheap beer…and shots of peppermint schnapps…and dartboards… What could possibly go wrong? That’s a story for another day.

On the Future

We need people — young professionals, families, retirees, you name it! Glens Falls spent too many years as a city that many like me were anxious to leave. My friends and I turned 18 and couldn’t wait to get out. It has taken years to lift that stigma, but the tide is turning. Every day I meet new people who have chosen to make Glens Falls home, or like me, have returned after years away. We don’t need a magic wand. Let’s just keep working together to make Glens Falls a better place to live and work.

My Glens Falls: Ryan Haig

This week, Ryan Haig shares his perspective on moving to Glens Falls from Cape Cod and putting down roots in this community, his go-to diner, the trio of downtown restaurants that would make up the perfect date night with his wife, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Ryan Haig and I am a father, husband and a transplant from Cape Cod. Moving from the beaches to the mountains over a decade ago was quite an adjustment, but I continue to be pleasantly surprised by Hometown USA and the many benefits of being part of this community.

I am a beneficiary of the radical generosity of this North Country community and God’s grace. I moved to this area without knowing a soul or having a cent to my name (a story for another day). Today I have a beautiful wife, two amazing children, a thriving career, lovely home, dynamic church community and a great network of friendship and support.

I work with Amsure, the insurance division of Adirondack Trust, and I partner with many North Country businesses by providing insurance solutions. I work with the best boss, best co-workers and benefit from a great culture. I’ve never had the Sunday night “scaries” and it may be hard to believe, but I actually look forward to going to work each day. My career affords me the opportunity to do what I am most passionate about: create connection, develop authentic relationships, and live out the Golden Rule in the business community.

On Life In and Around Glens Falls

Having not grown up in the Glens Falls area, I have a unique perspective which allows me to see what a special community this is. Of course it’s not perfect, but it is a community that values relationship and not just transaction. It has history and class but is also down to earth. It has a rich arts and nonprofit community. It has a growing and healthy business environment. It is a safe community to raise a family and the natural environment surrounding it is second to none.

Glens Falls will always have a special place in my heart as this is where my wife and I were married, had our first baby, graduated college (SUNY Adirondack & Skidmore,) and started a career. We wanted more space before baby number two came along, so we bought a home not far from town. While we do not reside in Glens Falls, our life still revolves around the rhythms of the Glens Falls area with work, social life, and community engagement.

We live in an a generous community and I have benefitted from being a part of it in many ways. I have so many examples of generosity, but one of my favorites is when I was starting night classes at SUNY Adirondack while working three jobs. At the time I was wondering if I had the ability and resources to jump back into academia after being out for over a decade. After my first semester I was praying about what to do when out of the blue one of my customers who I hardly knew, offered to pay for my education. Talk about an answer to prayer! Radical generosity.

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

I really do love my job, so I have two kinds of “ideal” days - weekdays and weekend days. For the perfect week day, it would start with my favorite quarterly event called Christian Business Men’s Connection. These breakfasts take place at the Queensbury Hotel where 50-100 men in our community gather to connect and be encouraged by speakers from all walks of life.

From there I would meet up with a client and deliver something delicious from Birch Bark Eatery or Lox of Bagels. It is important to fuel up with some quality carbs in order to tackle insurance related issues for their business.

Afterwards I would meet up with clients and friends on the golf course. Starting up golf this year at the ripe age of 38 is not pretty, but courtesy of PSG Golf it gets better every day. More importantly, at this stage of life, there is no other venue to spend extended quality time with great people and dig into meaningful conversations revolving around family, faith and business.

After searching for lost golf balls in the woods for 4 hours it would be time to put the suit and tie back on and shift gears to my favorite event of the year, the Adirondack Regional Chamber’s annual gala at the Sagamore Resort. The ARCC is a special organization and always seems to attract a crowd of amazing people. This event always reminds me that we are surrounded by community champions who are continuously working and sacrificing to make this region a place that people like me can move to, raise a family and put down roots to live out the American dream.

Family days are the ones we live for. There is always plenty to do in our area and my primary task is rallying the troops (my wife Tiffany, 6-year-old daughter Elsie and 3-year-old son Adam) to seize the day. An ideal day would be a Sunday which would start off with our Pine Knolls church family.

Since I am putting together the hypothetical ideal day, our favorite diner, Poopie’s, would happen to be open on this Sunday (typically only open Monday-Saturday) for a post-church brunch. There is nothing like a classic diner and one of my primary functions as a father is to introduce my children to the finer things in life.

From there we would focus in on kiddo time: Skyzone Trampoline park, Cole’s Woods, a whirlwind playground tour- whatever it takes to let out the crazy toddler energy.

After everyone is wiped out it would be time for date night with Tiffany. Since date nights are less frequent at this stage of life, we like to hit as many of our favorite spots as we can in one outing. This ideal date night would magically skip past any wait times and we would be able to seamlessly enjoy the patio at Doc’s (serenaded by Chris Ristau,) Farmacy, and finally Raul’s for Salmon Tacos (courtesy of JK.)

We’d arrive home just in time to watch our beloved New England Patriots dominate on Sunday night football.

And of course, no Sunday night scaries.

Ideal day indeed.

On the Past and the Future

This is a stretching time of life and it is a season that I will always wish to have back. Moving to the Glens Falls area over a decade ago started this chapter. The anchor points of getting married, welcoming my children to this world, completing a secondary education and starting a career will always be associated with putting down roots in the Glens Falls community. I have been a beneficiary of radical generosity and that generosity cannot be found just anywhere. This is a special community and I am grateful to have stumbled into it. I don’t know all that the future holds, but I do know that my calling in life is to be a servant leader in my home, at my job and in my community. I hope to play my part in giving back and continue to grow this generous spirit that is the bedrock of Hometown USA.

My Glens Falls: Erin Glock

This week, we’re chatting with Erin Glock! She shares some of her dog friendly favorites in the city (could her pups get any cuter?!), two of her go-to weekend activities, some favorite memories from the Civic Center, and more…

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is Erin Glock, and I live on the east side of Glens Falls with my husband Mike and our two golden retrievers, Charlie & Penny. We moved here about a year and a half ago, and purchased an adorable Cape with the best screened in porch that we all love.

Although I have a social work background, I work for KeyBank managing a construction portfolio of income property, healthcare, community development and small business projects.

On Life in Glens Falls

We chose to live in Glens Falls after we moved back from living in Utah for two years. We love hiking and being outdoors, so we wanted to be close to the Adirondacks and everything it has to offer. Although I didn’t grow up in Glens Falls (I grew up in Clifton Park), I have some fond memories coming up to the area with my family. From learning to ski at West Mountain, attending the Adirondack Red Wings games, and seeing the WWF professional wresting at the Glens Falls Civic Center back in the 80’s (The Iron Sheik, Rowdy Roddy Piper, the Junkyard Dog!). Oh, and I was once put in a headlock by George the Animal Steele!

A Perfect Glens Falls Day

Recently, I learned to play pickleball and boy is it addicting! You can find me playing bright and early every Saturday & Sunday morning at Crandall Park. I have only been playing for six months, but it’s so much fun and I play with a wonderful and welcoming group of people. If you haven’t tried it, what are you waiting for?

I also love to unwind with classes at Grounded on Glen. It is one of the most beautiful yoga studios I have ever been in. The instructors and classes are wonderful and they change your mindset by the end of the hour.

Must Love Dogs

When I’m not on the pickleball court or in yoga, I am usually walking the pups around the neighborhood, downtown, or hiking one of the many trails that surround us in the Adirondacks. One thing I appreciate about Glens Falls is how dog friendly it is.  We typically like to include them in most things we do, whether it’s shopping for our outdoor gear at Fountain Square Outfitters, having a meal at Davidson Brothers (they have a dog menu!), or grabbing an adult beverage at Common Roots, they are coming with us. Also, Charlie and I recently completed therapy dog training & testing. I am really looking forward to volunteering and starting our visits to bring joy and comfort to our community.

On Supporting Small Business

I love that Glens Falls is so supportive of their small business community. I grew up in a family who ran a small business. My dad owned a Goodyear franchise in downtown Schenectady for over twenty years. It’s not always easy for the small business owner and that’s why it’s so important that we invest in our own communities.

We have so many wonderful restaurants (some I still need to try), quaint shops and a thriving arts scene. Being able to access these things just by walking in my own community is something that I always wanted. I love that we can just take a stroll to grab a bite to eat, get our dogs groomed, catch a show at the theater, attend an arts festival at City Park, or grab an ice cream right off the bike path.
