The Weekender: June 14 - 16

Happy (almost) Friday! It’s one of our favorite weekends of the year in Glens Falls with one of the biggest events of the year happening downtown (and the weather might even cooperate!). There’s a lot we’re hoping to fit in this weekend, so let’s get to it!

One of our favorite events of the year! City Park will be filled with over 150 booths featuring everything from food to fine art, so there’s definitely something for everyone. Not to mention live music, activities for the kiddos, food trucks…we could go on! Grab the details here.

Just in case you’re looking for more shopping this weekend, Crandall Library is having a big summer book sale and rumor has it there are thousands of books (and DVDs and CDs…) up for grabs. We’ve never been, but might just need to get over there tomorrow morning to see what it’s all about! Find the details here.

The Adirondack Theatre Festival kicks off this weekend with the opening of Calling All Kates! We’ve loved every show we’ve seen at ATF in year’s past, and this year’s line-up looks better than ever. Calling All Kates (a romantic musical comedy!) runs from June 14 - 22, and you can grab tickets here (hurry - they’ll go fast!).

Father’s Day snuck up on us this year, but we sure love a good excuse to celebrate our Dads! In our family that typically involves a cookout of some kind, but if you don’t feel like firing up the grill, it looks like Davidson Brothers is having a Barbecue Buffet, and Farmstead Flatbread is having a Father’s Day Brunch. Combine a pretty Washington County town with a Balloon Festival and you have a sure win in our book! We’re really hoping to make it out to Cambridge for the Festival this weekend, which includes four balloon launches, fireworks, a strawberry shortcake sale, and a car show! Grab the details here.

Yup, you heard right, yoga on Glen Street; how cool is that? Such a great idea by Yoga Kayla to raise awareness of the benefits of togetherness, mindfulness, and the practice of Yoga. Even better, proceeds benefit our local Tri-County United Way. Details here.

In case you haven’t noticed, Americade is in full swing and wrapping up this weekend. It’s always fun to see all of the cool bikes, new and old. We don’t own a bike, but Tom always seems to get tempted this time of year... Ride safe out there everyone, and catch the details for this weekend’s events here.

We don’t have kids, (well, two with four paws), but if we did we’d have to check this out. The second annual Kids Expo looks to be jam-packed with everything you’d need to know about all the great resources for little ones in the area. This one caught our eye. A .5k - yep, POINT FIVE. The Tri-County United Way is hosting a .31 mile race downtown, followed by live music and activities in City Park. Get the scoop and sign up here. The good news is if you start training tonight, you’ll definitely be ready by Saturday ;)

In case the big “race” wasn’t ambitious enough for you, we’re also thinking of squeezing in the first hike of the season. We always love The Pinnacle or Anthony’s Nose for a quick climb with an awesome view, but Buck and Black Mountains are high on our list for local hikes as well. We’d love to hear other recommendations if you have any!

Looks like Dragons Baseball is back at East Field on Friday to kick off their summer season! And attention local basketball fans, JG3 will be throwing out the first pitch and hosting a meet and greet session during the game. We’re hoping to take in a couple of games this summer, and this one sounds like a great one to start with. Find the details here!

No Memorial Day would be complete without taking in the annual Glens Falls Memorial Day parade, which begins downtown and makes it’s way down Glen Street at 10am on Monday (grab those details here). And if you’re really in a parade state of mind this weekend, head just over the bridge for the South Glens Falls Parade on Friday night at 6pm. More info here.

Have you been to Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery? It’s right in Queensbury, and definitely worth a visit! Downtown events continue this weekend with Pet Fest! Seeing City Park filled to the brim with animals is pretty much Bri’s idea of heaven, and sounds like they’ll have demos from the Glens Falls Police Dept K-9 Unit, agility dogs, and adoptable pets, too. We’ll likely swing by after the Farmers’ Market! Details here.

It’s supposed to be in the 70s this weekend (80 degrees this Sunday?!), and the porch at Morgan and Co. seems like the perfect place to enjoy the warm weather - with a couple of drinks, of course. Well, and some of their famous Buffalo Cauliflower. Cheers!

After starting to dig into the history of our own home, we’re super interested in hearing the stories of other houses and buildings in the city. The Glens Falls Farmers’ Market is back outdoors starting this weekend! Nothing says spring and summer like riding our bikes downtown on a Saturday morning to scoop up fresh flowers, fruits, and veggies. So excited to start the routine back up this weekend! We brake for barn sales and antique shops, always, so it’s no surprise that the Washington County Antique Fair is high on our list this weekend. We’re looking forward to strolling the Fairgrounds (giant bag of kettle corn in hand, of course), and seeing what kinds of treasures await. More info here.

Ah, Cinco de Mayo - the perfect excuse to head down to Raul’s on a Sunday afternoon for a margarita, chips and guacamole - our fav. And if you’re more of a breakfast person, we hear Farmstead Flatbread has a Cinco de Mayo brunch happening with tunes from the Saratoga Strings Band. Or maybe, just do both :)

The Glens Falls Symphony has their Season Finale on Sunday afternoon, and while we unfortunately can’t make it, you absolutely should! It’s the perfect way to disconnect for a bit (which fittingly, Maestro Charles Peltz talked about on GFL here!), and with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, it’s sure to be a hit! Work up an appetite for Wing Fest by cleaning up downtown! There’s plenty of, ahem, “stuff” that turns up once the snow melts, so this is a perfect time to pitch in, pick up, and keep downtown looking spiffy for these pretty spring and summer months. Here are the details!

Spring in the city - finally! Buds on the trees, tulips sprouting up, patios and porches opening downtown. There’s just an energy about the city in the springtime that we love, and we’re so happy it’s here.

This Easter weekend, we’re planning on potting some pansies for the porch, and spending lots of time with family. Here’s what’s doin’:

With Earth Day coming up on Monday, we’re looking to do our part around the city. Last year, we spent an hour at Crandall Park picking up some of the garbage that had accumulated over the winter, and we’re planning to do the same this Saturday morning. There’s also an Earth Day event in City Park on Saturday at noon with food trucks and live music - details here!

We’re always up for a Block Party, especially one that includes BBQ, bourbon, and beer! The Park Theater is hosting a Johnny Cash Tribute Band on Saturday night, along with barbecue and all the fixins’. They’ll have the Doc’s Restaurant patio open (hope the weather holds out for it!), and if it rains they’ll continue the party inside. Grab tickets here.

How will you be celebrating Easter? Brunch? Dinner? Just candy? Both of our families get together for brunch at Bri’s parents, but if you’re not in the mood to cook, we hear they’re serving brunch at Morgan and Company, and The Queensbury Hotel, among others!

It wouldn’t be Easter without sweets, and while we’re both huge fans of candy (bring on the orange and pink jelly beans!), there’s always room for more dessert. It’s become one of our Easter traditions to swing by Lake George Baking Company for some of their Lemon Cookies, and that’s just what we’ll be up to this weekend. They basically melt in your mouth, and they’re always a huge hit with our whole family.

Maple Glazed Cider Donuts - need we say more? Just when we thought their regular cider donuts couldn’t get better… We took home a half dozen a couple of weeks ago and well, you’ll just need to taste them for yourself. So good. If we can get the Wagoneer started up, we’ll definitely be cruising out that way for more. And bonus: Slyboro is open for hard cider, too! Details here.

The Rotary 5K is this weekend and while we’re totally not in shape for it (okay fine, Tom is, but I’m definitely not), maybe you are! The race starts at 10am on Saturday morning at SUNY ADK and you can still register online here. I’ll be easing into the spring running season right after I finish the aforementioned maple glazed donuts ;)

Happy weekend! We can’t thank you all enough for your support and excitement with the launch of the website this week. We’re looking forward to continuing to develop this space and sharing all the good that’s happening in the city and beyond, and we hope you’ll help us spread the word! Exciting things to come.

Our weather app says temps in the sixties (!!!) this weekend and in addition to raking the yard and getting the back porch ready for the season (finally!), here’s what looks good to us:

We couldn’t help but notice the new logo up on the windows at the former Rock Hill Bakehouse + Cafe! The Exchange is officially open for business and we’re looking forward to checking out the new menu and seeing what’s in store for the space. Looks like they’re open Monday - Friday, so we’re thinking a Friday morning coffee date is in order (and maybe the avocado toast we saw on their Instagram!).

We’re always so excited to see new restaurants pop up downtown, and one of the latest, [farmacy] (from the owners of [forged] in Hudson Falls), opened their doors this week! We snuck in mid-week for a couple of drinks and small plates (we’ll share a peek tomorrow!), but we’ll probably be back sooner than later for more brown butter shishito peppers - so good. It’s the first year we’re not going to be out of town for Brewfest, and we can’t wait to check it out! Held on Saturday at The Queensbury Hotel, they’ve got 70+ brewers lined up (some wine, too!), along with 8 restaurants for food samples, and live music. And bonus! Saturday’s weather looks gorgeous so it’ll be the perfect afternoon to walk downtown. Details here!

We’re looking forward to this event in support of our friends from Common Roots Brewing Company in the wake of a fire at their brewery last week. While tickets for Rally for the Roots North at The Queensbury Hotel this weekend have sold out, there are still tickets available for the Rally for the Roots South event next Friday in Troy (details here).
